Supporting children and families across the Far North Queensland region
We are seeking both Indigenous and non-Indigenous carers to support children and young people across the Far North Queensland region.
We need carers who can provide safe, nurturing homes, support strong cultural connections and help children build a positive future.
Supporting First Nations Children and Families
Keeping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children connected to family, community and culture
We are particularly keen to hear from First Nations people who may be considering becoming a foster or kinship carer.
We recognise that connection to culture is central to a child's wellbeing and identity.
Wherever possible, we work alongside local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to support children to maintain strong cultural connections and relationships.
Our Commitments
We are committed to:
- Prioritising placements with family, kin and community in line with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle.
- Supporting carers with cultural support plans for every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child in our care.
- Partnering with local Indigenous community-controlled organisations to strengthen cultural identity and connection.
- Listening to, and being guided by, the voices of First Nations children, carers and Elders.

Jo is a passionate advocate for positive change that improves outcomes for children, young people, and families experiencing adversity and vulnerability. She brings this commitment to her work across the Foster and Kinship Care sector, where collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity underpin her approach. Jo is dedicated to supporting carers, strengthening partnerships, and working alongside teams to create safe, stable, and nurturing environments where children can thrive.
Having been part of IFYS for more than a decade, Jo has devoted her career to supporting communities and championing the vital role foster and kinship carers play in the lives of children and young people. Her commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to feel safe, valued, and connected continues to drive her work each day.
